Does America Have A Representative Democracy?

I ask this question in a pivotal time for the United States of America. Millions are unemployed, one in eight mortgages is in default or foreclosure. One in eight Americans is on food stamps. More than 120,000 families are filing for bankruptcy every month. I once again, I need to thank Elizabeth Warren and her article, America With out a Middle Class. Does a democracy lets its citizens crumble they way America has the past 30 years? Over the past 30 years the costs for food car clothing and appliances have all went down. The cost for housing, health, child care have increased by more than 100%, taxes have increased only 25%. The Bureau of Labor Statistics disclosed manufacturing jobs as a share of total employment has steadily decreased since 1948 from 27.5 to 6.9 in 2008. There is a correlation between American manufacturing, or lack there of, and of the decline of the American middle class.

The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was enacted under a democratic president. I see this as the reason why democrats lost power after Clinton. They abandoned their base for campaign contribution from companies who shipped well playing jobs and environment respecting businesses away from America. The Democrats deserved to loose power because they did not represent and protect the people who put them in power. I see this happening again if our trade policies do not change. The easiest example of what to change is was reported by Healthy Stuff. Toxins like lead, mercury and arsenic other substances that have been proven to be dangerous to humans and the environment are in a third of the most popular children's toys in the United States.

Some of todays news was distrusting, not only do we have institutions too big too fail but to big to punish. Bought and sold for corporate democrats are trying to derail bank reform, these same leeches have ensured credit card will continue to take advantage of consumers. There was some inspiring news today, Alan Grayson told Dick Cheney to shut the fuck up! Small businesses are standing up to insane secret derivative trading and a kid got his tongue stuck on a pole like in my favorite holiday movie.

When America stopped making stuff, opportunity for the average American worker switched from fair wages and health care to flipping burgers and being abused by heartless, trans-national corporations. I might be just jaded by my experiences at Best Buy and Hollywood video or I might hold some insight as to why these corporations sought to destroy the American middle class. But the American middles class is not the only victim. The nations whose resources and workers are exploited by heartless corporations are being trampled on. If the Obama administration does not work to reverse these conditions and achieve actual results their base will abandon the Democrats again. With no other party to turn to will Americans will flee in search of a real representative democracy, reclaim theirs or just write in Simpson's characters for public office.
